ON DELEGATION

Let go to grow

If everything depends on you, you aren't leading. You're the bottleneck.

Friend

I've been feeling stretched thin. I know I need to delegate more, but I keep hesitating. Either I feel like I'm burdening others, or I'm not sure they'll get it right. So I end up doing things myself, and it's exhausting.

Ajayya

Here's something worth reflecting on. Delegation isn't about offloading work. It's about growing people and building capacity. The problem usually isn't lack of trust in others — it's fear of losing control.

Friend

Exactly. I worry things won't be done the way I would do them.

Ajayya

That's valid. But let me ask: is the goal perfection or progress? If everything depends on you, then you're not leading. You're bottlenecking. A leader's job is to create systems and people that function without constant intervention.

Friend

But what if the outcome isn't good? The stakes are high sometimes.

Ajayya

Then coach before you delegate. Set clear expectations. Define the what and the why, but give them room to work out the how. People grow through ownership, not micromanagement. And yes, they may stumble. So did you, once.

Friend

So delegation is a learning opportunity — for them and for me?

Ajayya

It builds confidence, accountability and trust on both sides. And it gives you the space to focus on what genuinely needs your expertise. When you hoard tasks, you limit your impact. When you delegate well, you multiply it.

Friend

That shifts how I see it. I've been treating delegation as a risk. Maybe the real risk is not delegating.

Ajayya

Well said. The highest-performing teams aren't the ones with the busiest leaders. They're the ones with the most empowered teams.
